DVH Rare Pyrite in Slate Heart Cabochon Black Gold 41x37x7 (2625)

Description

I hand cut this piece using rare pyrite in slate from Brazil.  Dimensions in the title in millimetres.  While pyrite itself is not rare, finding jewelry grade pyrite on lovely black slate IS very rare and sought after!  I'm always looking for the exotic druzys and natural surface stones, especially when I'm shopping in Tucson at the international gem & mineral shows.  I have seen very few pieces of druzy pyrite on slate over the last 40 years but only in finished pieces done by German cutters from Idar Oberstein.  I never saw the rough.  Then in 2019 I was cruising through one of the newer shows and there was a Brazilian dealer with a few tables. They had one small pile of this stuff on a table and next to that a barrel of it.  I went through the pile AND the barrel and was only able to find 12 fist size pieces of jewelry quality rough and I bought them all!  Didn't get back to that show this year so don't know if they had anymore.  I just did a search for pyrite slate on the two biggest online stone marketplaces and I only got 24 results on one and 56 on the other, TOTAL.
Search for the keywords pyrite slate and compare!  You WON'T find other cabs or bead pendants like this and I don't know if I'll ever get more rough.  That's why this "simple pyrite" is priced the way it is.
